Tom Brady set a new standard for D.J. Augustin Jersey longevity in the modern NFL with his 23 seasons played as a member of the Patriots and Buccaneers. Now, his time in the league has come to an end. And with it, the league finally has a new oldest player for the first time in several years. It's no easy feat to become one of the oldest players in the NFL. After all, the average career length for players within the league is only 3.3 years. So, you not only have to be talented to stick around the NFL for a long time, but you also have to stay healthy and get a bit lucky. Some positions have it easier than others. Quarterbacks get hit the least among skill-position players, so they are often able to last longer than most on that side of the ball. Specialists like kickers, punters and long snappers also have relatively little wear-and-tear, so the best of the best there often enjoy lengthy careers. And, strangely enough, there always seem to be a few offensive linemen who are able to stick around long-term. They may get hit on every play, but those with the best technique who can avoid injuries can sometimes play into their late 30s and early 40s. IYER: The NFL's oldest players for 2023 are all members of those positional groups, but it's a familiar face Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers who currently holds the mantle as the NFL's oldest player. Here is a full breakdown of the grizzled veterans that continue to hang around the league. Below is a list of the 10 oldest players currently on NFL rosters and practice squads. (Getty Images) 1. Aaron Rodgers, Jets Position: Quarterback Birthdate:Dec. 2, 1983 Age: 39 Rodgers was the fifth-oldest player in the NFL during the 2022 season, but the retirements of Tom Brady and Andy Lee moved him up the list early in the offseason. And while Jason Peters and Robbie Gould haven't yet retired, each remains unsigned; that makes Rodgers the oldest player in the NFL. Rodgers is coming off a season that saw him complete 64.6 percent of his pa ses for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It was a down year by his standards but only because he was coming off back-to-back MVP-winning campaigns with the Packers. Now, he will look to find succe s in his first season with the Jets. MORE: 2. Marcedes Lewis, Bears Position: Tight end Birthdate:May 19, 1984 Age: 39 Rodgers and Lewis were teammates last season but have separated ahead of the 2023 campaign. Lewis signed with the Bears where he will serve as a key blocking tight end in what should be a run-heavy Chicago offense. Lewis has played in a whopping 251 games since being a first-round pick of the Jaguars in 2006. He has 432 career catches for 5,084 yards and 39 touchdowns entering the 2023 season but caught just six pa ses for 66 yards and two scores in 2022. 3. Matt Prater, Cardinals Position: Kicker Birthdate:Aug. 10, 1984 Age: 39 Prater is playing his 17th NFL season in 2023 and Mo Bamba Jersey has been one of the league's best kickers during his career. He has made 83.3 percent of his career field goals and entered the 2023 season having made an NFL record 71 field goals from beyond 50 yards on 95 attempts. Prater also once held the NFL record for the longest field goal ever made with a 64-yard boot before Justin Tucker surpa sed that milestone with a 66-yarder in 2022. That said, Prater was still 5 of 6 on 50-plus-yard kicks last season, so perhaps he can challenge Tucker's mark in 2023. (Getty Images) 4. Nick Folk, Titans Position: Kicker Birthdate: Nov. 5, 1984 Age: 38 Folk was cut by the Buccaneers early in 2017 and it seemed at that point that his career was over. But before the 2019 season, the Patriots signed him and he has been one of the league's best kickers ever since. He has made at least82.4 percent of his field goals in four seasons and, for his career, has made 83.1 percent of his kicks. The Patriots traded Folk to the Titans just ahead of the roster cut deadline after drafting Chad Ryland to be their succe sor to the veteran. Folk showcased that he still has plenty left in the tank in Week 1 by making all five of his field goal attempts and serving as all of Tenne see's offense in a 16-15 lo s to the Saints. 5. Duane Brown, Jets Position: Offensive tackle Birthdate:Aug. 30, 1985 Age: 38 Rodgers isn't the only member of the Jets among the NFL's oldest players. Brown, the team's starting left tackle, is long in the tooth as well. Brown has played in 215 career games to date all starts and was named an AP All-Pro in 2012. The five-time Pro Bowler should find succe s on Rodgers' blind side after allowing just one sack last season. 6. Matthew Slater, Patriots Position: Special teams Birthdate:Sept. 9, 1985 Age: 37 Slater may not be the best-known member of the Patriots dynasty, but he has won three Super Bowls and is currently the team's longest-tenured player. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft and has carved out a role for himself as a special teams ace. Slater has rarely played offense he is listed as a receiver but he has been named an All-Pro on special teams twice and has made it to a whopping 10 Pro Bowls. He has averaged 11 tackles per season over the last five years and will likely end up playing for the Patriots until he decides to retire. (Getty Images) 7. Brian Hoyer, Raiders Position: Quarterback Birthdate:Oct. 13, 1985 Age: 37 With so many long-time quarterbacks retiring from the NFL, Hoyer is now the second-oldest player at the position. The journeyman has played for nine teams during his NFL career but most notably had three stints with the Patriots and won Super Bowl 53 as a backup. Hoyer has a career record of 16-24 as a starter and has completed 59.4 percent of his pa ses for 10,668 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. Incredibly, he hasn't won a start since Week 5 of the 2016 season when he was with the Bears; he is 0-12 since then. So, while Hoyer will provide the Raiders with experience if Jimmy Garoppolo goes down, it may be hard for him to help the team consistently win. 8. J.J. Jansen, Panthers Position: Long snapper Birthdate:Jan. 20, 1986 Age: 37 Long snappers are often forgotten men in the Wes Iwundu Jersey NFL. The great ones are almost never mentioned by name, and Jansen would qualify as one of the best of the last couple of decades. The Notre Dame product has been with the Panthers since 2009 and has never mi sed a game, playing in 227 and recording 21 total tackles. Even better? Jansen made a Pro Bowl in 2013. That's about all that the average NFL fan might know about him, and his living in anonymity has allowed him to enjoy a 15-year career and become one of the NFL's oldest players. MORE: 9. Jon Weeks, Texans Position: Long snapper Birthdate:Feb. 17, 1986 Age: 37 Weeks' career is similar to that of Jansen. He went undrafted in 2010 and joined the Texans out of Baylor. He hasn't mi sed a game since then, playing in 211 games and notching 32 total tackles on special teams. Like Jansen, Weeks made one Pro Bowl his came in 2015 but has largely remained out of the spotlight otherwise. That's what teams are often looking for most in a long snapper. 10. Thomas Morstead, Jets Position: Punter Birthdate:March 8, 1986 Age: 37 The Jets have an intriguing mix of young stars, like Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson, and savvy veterans entering the 2023 season. They employ three of the league's 10 oldest players and that includes their punter, Morstead. Morstead is best known for his 12-year stint as the Saints punter. He won Super Bowl 44 during his rookie season and developed into a consistent punter after that, making the Pro Bowl in 2012 and being named an All-Pro second-teamer that year as well. He has averaged 46.5 yards per punt and a net average of 41.5 yards during his career, so he should be an upgrade over Braden Mann, for whom Morstead was an injury replacement for seven games in 2021.
